Oral hygiene is the daily practice of keeping the mouth, teeth, and gums clean and healthy to prevent infections, decay, and disease. It involves brushing twice daily, daily flossing, tongue cleaning, using medicated mouth washes and regular dental check-ups. Proper oral hygiene removes plaque, preventing tooth loss, bad breath, and severe gum diseases.

How can one improve their oral hygiene?

Good oral hygiene protects the teeth and gums and keeps the smile beautiful. There are 5 important aspects of maintain good oral hygiene. Each and every aspect is equally important.

  • Brushing the teeth twice a day. One should use a soft to medium bristled toothbrush only. Hard bristles can damage the gums and tooth enamel. During brushing, one should place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gums. This helps sweep away plaque and bacteria at the gum line. Be sure to brush all teeth surfaces, including the backs and sides.
  • The tooth paste one uses shouldn’t be too abrasive. It possible a fluoridated tooth paste is best to use. A peanut size tooth paste should be used on the brush and then used.
  • Flossing between the teeth atleast once daily is an important aspect of maintaining oral hygiene. It’s practically not possible to reach the spaces between your teeth with brushing alone. To clean these areas, a floss is to be used. Especially for patients who have spacing between the teeth, a floss should definitely be used. Water flossers are also excellent for removing large pieces of food and debris between the teeth. Especially for people who have dental implants in their mouth a water flosser is an excellent device to maintain better oral hygiene.
  • Tongue cleaning is equally important aspect or good oral hygiene. Tongue holds bacteria like a sponge, that needs to be removed. Whenever one brushes his teeth, cleaning of the tongue shouldn’t be forgotten. One can use the toothbrush or a tongue scrapper for this purpose.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash every day is also an important aspect of excellent oral hygiene. Antibacterial mouthwash helps keep harmful oral bacteria at bay. In addition to washing away food and debris, it also reduces plaque buildup. Be sure to choose an alcohol-free formula to prevent dry mouth.

Visiting a dentist regularly is an important preventive measure. Routine dental exams and cleanings are essential for good oral health. Many people do well with six-month visits. But, if one is prone to cavities, gum disease or other oral health problems, one may need more frequent appointments.

Avoid smoking and other tobacco products. Smoking is a leading cause of gum disease and oral cancer. It’s best to avoid these products altogether.
